The Annual Western Balkans Vis-Pre Moot is a two day competition for law student from the region where students apply their legal knowledge and practical skills in a simulated international comercial arbitration dispute, thereby preparing themselves for the International Willem C. Vis Moot competition, held annually in Vienna, which fosters the study of international commercial law and arbitration. The International Willem C. Vis Moot competition has been held for the past 26 years, with over 310 participating universities. The University of Prishtina team has participated in this competition since 2002, and ILIRIA College participated for the first time in 2016.
During the Pre-Moot, teams from universities across the region compete against each other in a series of rounds that are judged by practicing lawyers and arbitrators, many of whom are Vis alumni. The judges also provide feedback-both on substantive law and style, to allow students to fine tune their presentations in advance of the international competition in Vienna.
This Pre-Moot provides an opportunity for law students to gain substantive knowledge in international commercial law, develop their practical legal and advocacy skills, and receive feedback from practicing lawyers and arbitrators. The skills honed and knowledge gained by this experience will prepare students to be effective lawyers who, in their practice, can advise private clients about the benefits of using arbitration, and properly advocate for their clients in such proceedings. The Pre-Moot also contributes to greater confidence in rule of law in Kosovo by increasing awareness of arbitration as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism and highlighting its benefits to the business and legal communities, i.e., cheaper and faster alternative to the courts.
